Introduction
Humans are naturally a diurnal species, active during the day and asleep at night.
Electric lighting enables humans to extend their activities into night.
Over the past quarter century we have learned more about the impact of light at night on visual performance (e.g., driving), perception (e.g., feelings of safety and security) and circadian rhythms (e.g., sleep).
Each of the neural systems underlying these phenomena responds differently to retinal light exposure.
These differences can, and should, lead to different lighting solutions that would maximize human benefits at minimal costs, both financial and health related.
The workshop will describe how different neural channels emanating from the retina respond to light and how this underlying science forms a foundation for new approaches to outdoor lighting, including the mitigation of light pollution.
